The Merge of Science and Religion To Become a Better Person and to Build a Great Company
Science and religion have often been considered mutually exclusive. Science is investigating the natural world through experimentation and observation to answer questions of “how”. Religion is based on faith, things you cannot see and often are meant to explain the “why” on questions related to meaning, purpose and morality.
During this season of Christmas, I felt inspired to share my thoughts as a Catholic Christian Scientist. I am far from perfect, but I strive each day to be better and to do better both in my personal life but also in my business. The parable told in the book of Matthew is a constant reminder of how I try to live my life and build a strong foundation for my life and my businesses.
Building on a Rock: Scripture as a Model for Life and Business
The parable told in Matthew Chapter 7 is the story of the man who built his house on a rock. In this story, the wise man who builds his house on rock represents those who hear Jesus’ words and put them into practice; his house stands firm against storms, floods, and wind. The foolish man who builds on sand represents those who hear his words but do not act on them; his house collapses when the storms come. I wake each day and read scripture and pray so that I not only hear the word but put them in practice each day.
This is similar to building my business on a rock. For me, the foundational rock of my business is the science of nitric oxide based on what we have learned from scientific investigations, observations and being able to reproduce the results over and over again.
There are many other companies who purport to sell nitric oxide products but ignore the science of nitric oxide. These companies represent the “foolish” builder for they may hear the words or read the science of nitric oxide but ignore because it is difficult or because there are more profits in inferior products that do not and cannot work as they advertise them. For the love of money is the root of all evil and I know the leaders of many companies who are solely driven by the love of money, ego and self-edification.
A Scientific Foundation: Nitric Oxide, Research, and Reproducible Truth
I spent more than 20 years in basic science research and the clinical translation of the basic science solely focused on nitric oxide. During those 20 years, I have published over 100 peer-reviewed scientific articles in some of the top medical and scientific journals. I am credited with several seminal discoveries in the field with my top three below:
- Discovered that nitrite and nitrate are indispensable nutrients. Deficiencies in these nutrients contribute to chronic disease.
- Nitric oxide is a hormone produced by the vascular endothelium and has systemic endocrine effects on every organ system in the body.
- Discovered and created a solid dose form of nitric oxide gas that can restore and recapitulate nitric oxide production and signaling.
I document this not to impress you but rather to impress upon you I understand the science of nitric oxide and what it takes to make products that work. There is no other company out there who understands this nor do they have any real scientists within those companies who understand this.
To understand how the body works, I think it is important to have conversation with our Creator. I believe this is what has provided insight into my discoveries. A mechanic cannot fix or repair things he does not understand or without a clear understanding of how something works. I believe my undergraduate studies and degree in Biochemistry and my Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Physiology have afforded me a unique set of skills and understanding to solve complex problems.
Nitric oxide is an odorless and colorless gas that you cannot see, smell, taste or feel. However, we have developed technology to detect nitric oxide in the gas phase. Utilizing such analytical technology, we can verify and detect nitric oxide liberated from our product technology. Moreover, we can also demonstrate that other products fail to deliver nitric oxide.
The difference in science and religion is that in science we can observe, detect, verify and quantify things such as nitric oxide. In religion, we rely on faith.
In 2 Kings 6:15-17 it states “Things are there when you can’t see them, present but invisible” obviously referring to the Holy Spirit but I can also relate this to nitric oxide. All my products produce nitric oxide when consumed or administered and so nitric oxide is there, present but invisible, but certainly does its job inside the human body. Nitric oxide is dilating your blood vessels, improving oxygen delivery, mobilizing stem cells, lengthening your telomeres, activating your mitochondria and optimizing every biochemical system in your body. Many people feel the effects of nitric oxide from our product, but some do not. However, know that it is present but invisible and it is working within you.
Choosing the Wise Builder
As we continue to advance the awareness and understanding of nitric oxide, the market demand for nitric oxide will increase. As a result, there will be many other companies entering this space. I ask you to be diligent and scrutinize any product offering.
Refer to the parable in Matthew. Look for companies built by a wise builder. The wise builder is a man likened to someone who “hears these words of mine and does them”. His house is built on a solid foundation of rock, symbolizing a life grounded in the teachings of Jesus. Any business should also be built on a solid foundation of science and scientific understanding. Avoid people and companies who represent foolish builders. These are those who “hear these words of mine and does not do them” or who builds a company and products without the solid foundation of science. He who builds his house on sand, a weak and unstable foundation, symbolizes a life without a solid basis for its actions. As the scripture states. The storms will come. The rain, floods, and wind represent the challenges, difficulties, and trials of life.
The wise man’s house remains standing because it has a strong foundation, while the foolish man’s house falls with a great crash. The parable teaches me all I need for both my personal life and the life of my business and companies. Living according to Jesus’ teachings provides a secure foundation for life, capable of withstanding hardship. Building a company built on the secure foundation of science and truth provides a strong company capable of withstanding hardship. My company and I have survived many hardships and I credit a rock solid foundation on which both are built.
