HEART HEALTH MONTH: NITRIC OXIDE AT THE CORE OF YOUR HEALTH
Every February we celebrate Heart Health Month as a way to bring awareness around cardiovascular disease. This concept began back in 1963, over a half century ago to encourage Americans to help in the battle against cardiovascular disease. Since the 1960s the age-adjusted rate of deaths from cardiovascular disease has declined. However, it still remains the number one killer of men and women worldwide. In the United States, someone has a heart attack every 40 seconds. Every 60 seconds, more than one person in the United States dies from a heart disease-related event. The estimated annual incidence of heart attack in the United States is 720,000 new attacks and 335,000 recurrent attacks. The average age at the first heart attack is 65.6 years for men and 72.0 years for females.Heart disease is the leading cause of death for people of most racial/ethnic groups in the United States, including African Americans, Hispanics and whites. Nearly half of all African American men and women have some form of heart disease. For Asian Americans or Pacific Islanders and American Indians or Alaska Natives, heart disease is second only to cancer. Over 37% of Americans are obese. Heart disease costs the United States about $200 billion each year. This total includes the cost of health care services, medications and lost productivity.About 75 million American adults (32%) have high blood pressure—that’s 1 in every 3 adults. Another 1 in 3 American adults has prehypertension—blood pressure numbers that are higher than normal—but not yet in clinical hypertension range that becomes treatable by drug therapy. That is over 220,000,000 Americans that have the number one risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease. These numbers are staggering and simply unacceptable.
I recently reviewed all the educational material that goes out for Heart Health Month. The message is to eat healthier and to get exercise. In over 50 years ago, this is still the messaging. Is this the best we can do? There has been billions of dollars in research spent during this time but yet there is no new material or education on how to combat heart disease. Truly unbelievable. So I thought I would offer you fundamental truths that will not only treat and cure existing cardiovascular disease but actually prevent it from occurring. As you might guess, it has to do with nitric oxide.
I’ll offer you simple strategies to restore the production of nitric oxide. The more than 170,000 scientific publications on nitric oxide reveal that loss of production of nitric oxide is what is responsible for cardiovascular disease. Yes, let me repeat. You lose nitric oxide you get cardiovascular disease. You maintain nitric oxide production and you avoid cardiovascular disease. So how do you maintain and restore nitric oxide production? Its very simple.
- Eliminate the things that are inhibiting or disrupting nitric oxide production
- Stop using mouthwash
- Stop using antacids
- Stop eating simple carbohydrates and drinking sodas
- Stop being lazy and get some exercise
- Stop smoking
- Stop using antibacterial soaps and lotions on your skin
- Include strategies to restore and replete nitric oxide production
- Include more green leafy vegetables in your diet (3-5 servings per day)
- Get at least 20 minutes of exercise per day.
- Practice deep breathing, breathing in through your nose for 5 seconds and then exhale through your mouth for 6 seconds, pause 3 second then repeat 10 times.
- Drink 3-4 liter of good clean water daily to maintain hydration
- Sweat for at least a half hour a day in an infrared sauna. Ammonia oxidizing bacteria reside on our skin that generate nitric oxide from the ammonia in our sweat.
- Consider taking a patented and clinically proven nitric oxide supplement.
It is that simple. It is not just important to eat better and get more exercise but you must also stop doing the things that are inhibiting your body from making sufficient nitric oxide. All of the above are scientifically and clinically proven to improve nitric oxide and improve your health. I am 100% confident that if every American practiced these two steps above, cardiovascular disease would be eradicated and similar to polio, a thing of the past. However, this cannot and will not happen until people understand and become accountable for their own health and do what they are supposed to do.
I recommend the mission of this month change from bringing awareness to this preventable problem to actually act on it and incorporate strategies that restore the production of nitric oxide. You cannot affect cardiovascular disease without nitric oxide. These are the facts. You want to change the world? Begin by changing your world and your own health and those of your family. You change the life of one person and you have changed the world.
